Why zoned mattresses matter in contract sleep environments

Silentnight is pleased to announce that we are now a Certified B Corporation™, a globally recognised certification for businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance. This marks an important milestone in our ongoing sustainability journey.

What is a zoned mattress?

A zoned mattress is designed to provide different levels of support across the body, rather than a single, uniform feel from head to toe. By responding to how weight is naturally distributed, zoning helps maintain healthier spinal alignment and more consistent comfort throughout the night.

At Silentnight Contract, our core mattresses feature a single-sided zoned Mirapocket® spring system, engineered specifically for contract environments. It’s a considered approach to support and comfort, one that recognises no two guests sleep the same, and no mattress in hospitality gets an easy night’s work.

Our zoned Mirapocket® spring system explained

At the core of our mattresses is Mirapocket® technology: individually fabric-encased pocket springs that move independently to respond to the sleeper’s body shape, weight and movement. This allows pressure to be distributed evenly and support to adjust naturally as guests change position during the night.

The system uses edge-to-edge springs to maximise the usable sleeping surface and reinforce the mattress perimeter. This not only improves comfort, but also supports faster recovery when guests sit on the edge of the bed, an everyday reality in contract settings.

Unlike many spring systems, our Mirapocket® coils are held under tension. This improves structural integrity, enhances durability and helps the mattress maintain its performance over time. The springs are manufactured using 20% recycled content and are fully recyclable at the end of life, supporting a more responsible approach to product design.

Why zoning matters for sleep quality

The body places very specific demands on a mattress. Gravity compresses the spine throughout the day, leaving us up to 2cm shorter by bedtime. During sleep, the spine needs time to realign and rehydrate, while the body naturally moves around 35 times per night to support healthy circulation.

Nearly half of our body weight is concentrated through the hips, requiring firmer support, while around 70% of people sleep on their side, meaning the shoulders need greater cushioning. Zoned support, with a firmer central zone and more adaptive shoulder support, has been shown to outperform simply increasing spring count, helping prevent hammocking and spinal misalignment.

Designed for every guest, every night

In contract environments, mattresses must perform for guests of different shapes, sizes and sleeping positions, often on consecutive nights. Zoned mattresses adapt to the individual sleeper, helping deliver a consistently comfortable experience across a wide range of guest profiles.

By supporting natural spinal alignment, zoned construction helps promote deeper, more restorative sleep, so guests wake feeling rested and ready for the day ahead.

Backed by biomechanics research

Our zoned spring systems are informed by research carried out with biomechanics specialists in the movement lab at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). This work helps us minimise spinal torsion and keep the spine as close to neutral as possible during sleep.

Maintaining neutral alignment supports the rehydration of vertebral discs, the spine’s natural shock absorbers, helping protect back health and improve overall sleep quality.
